B-SAFE Teen Staff Manager (All Sites)

Program Description

St. Stephen's Youth Programs (SSYP) is an afterschool and summer academic and enrichment program for young people from first grade through high school. The goal of the program is to build a community where all people feel safe, feel big, and feel connected. During B-SAFE 2023, SSYP will run program in the following neighborhoods:

  • South End (elementary students) - double site

  • Lower Roxbury (middle school students)*

Each site includes academic enrichment, Social and Emotional Support (SES), health & wellness, visual and performing art workshops; science activities; recreational activities; celebratory events; and many field trips. A healthy breakfast, lunch, and snack is served each day. While based in Episcopal churches, SSYP has no required religious component for staff or youth.

For high school youth, SSYP runs a CIT (Counselor-in-Training) program that is a paid job and includes trainings on employment skills, college readiness, healthy relationships, financial literacy, and life skills. There are about 20-25 CITs at each site.

Teen Staff Manager Position Description

SSYP is hiring three Teen Staff Managers. The Teen Staff Manager is responsible for supervising 20-30 Counselors-in-Training (CITs) at each site. This supervision includes ongoing, coaching, mentoring, and redirection. The Teen Staff Manager also facilitates weekly team building and professional development trainings. They are responsible for CIT scheduling and payroll. The Teen Staff Manager also works closely with all B-SAFE staff to support all aspects of the site.

A good candidate for this position would have:

  • Ability to manage a group, and to teach and support a high school range grade levels.

  • Ability to communicate proactively about both what is going well with SES in program and where obstacles are encountered.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, active environment with a consistently positive, can-do attitude.

  • Ability to recognize and address issues early on and take initiative to solve problems.

  • Ability to contribute to the maintenance of order and neatness in a job setting.

  • Ability to report accomplishments and challenges promptly and in various formats

RESPONSIBILITIES

YOUTH RELATIONSHIPS

  • Building and maintaining relationships with 20-30 high school CITs

  • Supervising CITs in their job responsibilities

  • Ensuring the safety of all young people

  • Planning and facilitating weekly training session

STAFF RELATIONSHIPS

  • Working with adult staff to support all aspects of program

  • Collegially with peer staff and fostering a spirit of cooperation

  • Evaluating program quality and staff performance using nationally recognized tools

  • Balancing teamwork and collective program efforts with independent initiative and action for site

PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Planning and evaluating with leadership team, including ongoing reporting and data collection

  • Engaging in daily contact and weekly supervision with Supervisor

  • Responding positively and promptly to supervision and redirection

  • Committing to all key program dates listed below

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent experience also accepted

  • Desire to want to build relationships and mentor teen staff

  • Experience supervising or working with teen staff

  • Ability to work extremely well on a team

  • Excellent communication skills, including written and spoken communication with a wide variety of people

  • High level of attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines, can-do attitude, flexibility, and sense of humor

  • Spanish language skills STRONGLY preferred

KEY DATES

  • Training: Late June (exact dates to be announced)

  • Program: Wednesday, July 5th - Thursday, August 4th

Days/Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

Compensation: $192 per day ($21.10 per hour)
