B-PEACE VIOLENCE PREVENTION PROGRAM
UPCOMING EVENTS
B-PEACE OVERVIEW
Originally, B-Peace was created in remembrance of Jorge Fuentes, 19, a beloved B-SAFE program member who was shot and killed on the street outside of his Dorchester home on Sept. 10 2012.
Fuentes joined B-SAFE as a child in the program’s first year and grew up in it, eventually becoming a site assistant and then lead counselor. He had participated in every activity and opportunity offered through B-SAFE and its companion afterschool program, B-READY.
Bishop M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE convened a group of clergy and lay leaders to help determine how the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts could take meaningful action toward alleviating some of the root causes of violence in our communities. The 2012 Diocesan Convention formalized that group and its charge by unanimously voting to create the Jorge Fuentes Anti-violence Task Force.
Mr. Sumner and the SSYP leadership began discussions with our youth, young adults, staff and parent community in the fall of 2022 about meeting the increased educational and SES needs of our community. They identified the need to strengthen the pro-social environment centered on SSYP by addressing increasing gaps in educational, economic, safety and social equity.
B PEACE is rebranded in 2024: Power, Equity, Action, Community, Education. The new efforts and initiatives are possible thanks to funding from the community empowerment and reinvestment grant program. "
